Washington Local creates new position for school safety

Washington Local Schools is hiring a new position in the district to enhance their security presence.

The district says they have always taken safety seriously, but this year, they're doing something a little different.

"I want to make sure that when I drop my child off to the school, that they're in a safe, clean, healthy learning environment," said Sgt. Joe Heffernan of the Toledo Police.

Heffernan is a parent and understands how important it is to put school safety first.

"When a kid has to worry about being beat up, or being bullied, being made fun of, that really impedes their academic performance," Heffernan said.

So this year, the school hired a new position: Randy Sehl is the district's director of police, safety and security. The position was created to coordinate the district's safety and security efforts with all the agencies involved.

"Washington Local Schools have created a new public safety agency, and we're glad to team up with Toledo Police, Lucas County Sheriff's, and Washington Township Police to ensure the safety of our students through proactive safety education and being very visible in our buildings," Sehl said.

This year the district is also providing DARE programs in all of the elementary schools and working to be more visible in the community.
