FINDLAY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Changes are coming to Findlay as buildings on the 300 block of South Main Street are under construction.

The buildings, once badly damaged by floods, are being turned into luxury apartments.

"You see people hanging out on the streets now, and actually walking around," said Shawn Kirk, a Findlay resident. "You didn't see that 5-10 years ago."

Downtown Findlay now features restaurants and boutiques which bring a younger crowd to explore the city.

"With all the businesses coming to the downtown area, it's a good place for downtown workers to come live," said Jeremy Hatch, who works in Findlay.

The buildings on the 300 block of South Main have been vacant since the flood of 2007. Now they're being transformed into luxury lofts, which will make finding a downtown residence easier.

Hancock County commissioners say Jim Heck, owner of Heck Rentals, purchased the buildings and is heading up the renovation project.

"Heck has a long history of doing good downtown developments," said Commissioner Brian Robertson. "Hopefully this will be another one that will bring investments, jobs and people to live, work and play in Hancock County."

Robertson says with major corporations like Marathon Petroleum and Cooper Tires based in Findlay, a lot of young people are moving to the city and they want options.

"If you know those young professionals, [ages] 25-35, this is something they love," he said. "It's next to the restaurants, next to the social night life. With today's laws regarding OVI, it's certainly a much easier situation for them to work and play, so to speak, and have a social life."

Heck wants to wrap up renovations by December, and hopefully receive a tax credit from the state for preserving the historic buildings.
