Mayoral candidates come together to serve homeless

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo's two mayoral candidates have clashed this campaign season on the issue of homelessness.

On Saturday, Mayor Mike Bell and Mike Collins set aside their differences and served dinner at the Family House, a homeless shelter for families.

The candidates differ on how shelters like this should be funded.

Family house officials hope the two politicians leave with a greater understanding of the homeless after breaking bread with them.

"It was just a great opportunity to get the candidates out here to rub shoulders with those who are unhoused and for those who are unhoused to really talk about their issues and what they're facing here in Toledo," said Renee Palacios of Family House.

Family house currently has 107 residents, including 65 children.
