Family Dollar moving in to former Churchill's

The sign at the old Churchill's store in west Toledo will soon be coming down.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - The sign at the old Churchill's store in west Toledo will soon be coming down.

The grocery store has been closed for just over a year. Now, a new tenant is moving in.

Family Dollar will open its fourth store in the Toledo area early next year.

Churchill's was a family-owned tradition, open for 65 years. Its departure left a void in the neighborhood for shoppers, disappointed over losing the personal service employees provided, but residents plan to welcome Family Dollar with open arms.

"I think it's pretty exciting," said Vince Schiavone. "It's a convenient location. It will be nice to be able to walk here."

Surrounding businesses are excited, too. The owner of Elegance with Style expects to see more foot traffic in the area because of Family Dollar.

"It will be a quick business where people are coming in and out, and they can see the smaller businesses that are around and attract them to come to businesses like myself," said Marcia Hopkins.

The owner of Wersell"s Bike Shop would prefer so see another family-owned grocery store move in, but says it's better than what's there now.

"I'm glad that something is going in over there," Jill Wersell said. "That it's not a vacant building. At least there's money coming in."

Family Dollar will begin renovating the building next month.
