William Niehous, OI exec. held captive for years in Venezuela, dead at 82

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Former Owens-Illinois executive William Niehous passed away at the age of 82 on Thursday.

Niehous made national headlines when he was kidnapped in Venezuela in 1976 and held for three and a half years. He was eventually rescued and returned to the United States on June 29, 1979.

Before beginning work at OI, Niehous was drafted in 1953 and spent 18 months in Panmunjom, Korea, according to his obituary.

The obituary also outlines the work Niehous did volunteering for countless organizations in multiple countries throughout his time with OI, including in Mexico City, Madrid, Spain and Venezuela.

Niehous is survived by his wife of 59 years, Donna; his sons Mark (Karen) and Craig (Nancy); four grandchildren, Allison, Vaughn, Michael and Anne, and his sister, Judith Swayne.

The family will receive friends at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave. from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, October 14th. Memorial services will be at St. Michael's in the Hills, 4718 Brittany Rd. at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 15. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, YMCA, Partners in Education, St. Michaels in the Hills, or the charity of the donor's choice.

    Construction is now underway for one of the first medicinal marijuana facilities in the Gibsonburg area. The Standard Wellness Company was awarded one of Ohio's cultivation licenses for medicinal marijuana.
