Low early voter turnout could affect mayoral election

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

With the voting cycle for the upcoming Nov. 5 election entering its second week, the Lucas County Board of Elections says so far, roughly 3,100 voters have either voted early or have requested a ballot by mail.

That could be an indication of low turnout.

Toledoan Ruth Sagan says she's starting to pay more attention to the race for mayor because she wasn't happy about Mayor Bell taking trips to China to try to lure foreign investors to town.

"[I'm] disappointed," she said. "I feel we need to invest in America more. Toledo needs more local investors."

Sagan says between now and November she plans on learning more about Mayor Bell's challenger, Mike Collins.

"I'd like to hear more about what he has to say for Toledo," she said.

Bell campaign spokesman BJ Fischer says just like the primary, the focus will be on delivering a message about Mayor Bell's record in office and connecting with individual voters.

"The turnout issue is going to be about who can motivate their supporters, who can get their voters to the polls, both early, if possible, but really on Election Day," Fischer said.

While low turnout could favor the incumbent, Fischer says the Bell campaign will be anything but complacent.

Collins says events in Washington D.C. and Columbus have caused apathy among citizens and as a result, there's waning interest for people getting involved in elections. He says he hopes a campaign with integrity will give people a reason to vote on Nov. 5.
