TPS walk to promote safe routes to school

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

In an effort to promote safe travels to and from school, Mayor Mike Bell and Toledo Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Romules Durant teamed up to lead 100 students on a walk Wednesday morning.

The walk started at Sherman Elementary School and ended at the Robert J. Anderson Agricultural Center. Parents, grandparents and caretakers were encouraged to participate with student.

The walk will also serve as a kickoff for the ‘Safe Routes to School Travel Plan'. The 'School Travel Plan' is a written document that will outline each of the 41 K-8 schools in the Toledo Public School system to make traveling to and from school safer and more sustainable.  Parent surveys, student travel tallies, principal surveys, and walking audits will be conducted in order to identify key priorities for the 'School Travel Plan' that will later be used to pursue funding opportunities for community development of safer routes to walk or bike.
