Trooper injured after suspect's vehicle flips

NORTH AVONDALE, OH (FOX19) -

An Ohio State Trooper is injured after trying to make a traffic stop on Tuesday evening in North Avondale.

The incident happened around 5:15 p.m. on Paddock Road near Stratford.

Police say that as Trooper Brad Hess pulled a vehicle over for a marked lanes violation, he noticed the smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle occupied by two passengers.

Officers said that Hess had the passenger, Rashawn Gaston, exit the vehicle for a search. Hess requested the Cincinnati Police Department to assist in the search.

Police say that the driver of the vehicle, Dimitri Harvill, remained in the vehicle as Hess conducted the search.

Officers say that Harvill attempted to flee the scene as Hess was searching the passenger. Authorities say that Hess entered the fleeing vehicle from the passenger side door as the vehicle fled westbound on Paddock Road.

After a short distance, police say the vehicle left the side of the roadway, struck two trees and overturned. Officers say the driver then fled on foot.

Cincinnati Police and K-9 units responded near Avon Fields Gold Course in pursuit the fleeing suspect. Harvill remains at large.

Hess was transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center with minor injuries.
