SANDUSKY COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Humane Society of Sandusky County, the Sandusky County Sheriff's Office and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation are investigating a possible case of animal cruelty.

Investigators converged on a barn on US 20 near Woodville, OH Tuesday after receiving a tip over the weekend that a dead goat was seen in the pasture.

An official with the Sandusky County Animal Cruelty Investigative Unit says 16 animals were seized from the farm, including 13 goats, two cows and one sheep. Two other goats and a cow were found already dead.

"We, at this point, don't know the cause of death," said Kelly Askins, an animal cruelty investigator. "Hopefully we'll be finding that out here in the next little bit...Whether they died of natural causes or not, when you leave animal carcasses out, the other animals in the environment are in unsanitary conditions."

Police say while investigators were at the scene, the farm owner Thomas Linke driving a pick-up truck crashed into a vehicle parked near the barn. No one was hurt in the collision, but an officer was almost hit.

"I was collecting animals to take them to Westview Animal Hospital…and I heard a big boom. And I ran out here to see if everybody was ok and my SUV was demolished," said the volunteer whose car was hit.

Linke was taken into custody and is being charged with assault of a police officer and obstructing official business. He could also face animal cruelty charges.
