Community remembers victims of domestic violence

PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Community members gathered at the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo in Perrysburg Monday evening to remember victims of domestic violence; particularly the 69 killed in northwest Ohio in the last decade.

A wooden silhouette stood to represent each victim, and bore the name and story of each woman or girl. Real live women shared the stories of those lost out loud.

"I think it's important because it helps take the issue of domestic violence out of a realm of statistics, and into the realm of reality. Real people, real names, their real stories," said Bowling Green State University Women's Center Director Mary Krueger. "It makes it harder for people to deny, the existence of domestic violence in our community. They can't say it doesn't happen here because look, here it is."

It was an emotional evening for the families of many of the women remembered.

"Family members and the friends, I mean they come up and they thank us and thank us, and they give us photographers of their mothers and their sisters and their daughters and it really is meaningful to them and that's really who we do this for," said Krueger.
