Wood County students encouraged to pursue skilled labor

WOOD COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A Good Jobs Initiative is launching in Wood County, with officials encouraging more students to pursue skilled jobs, instead of a traditional four-year degree.

Officials say there are plenty of skilled jobs available, but not enough young people to fill them. As older, skilled workers look towards retirement, there is a shortage of youth lined up to take their place at manufacturing companies.

"These types of jobs are not what they used to be. They require a lot of education. They're clean jobs that require a lot of expertise," explained Joel Kuhlman, co-commissioner.

Manufacturers say it takes more than a classroom education to master skills, such as welding. As a part of this new program, schools are getting more involved, trying to broaden the definition of what a good job really is.

"We have plenty of really talented students who may shy away from that because of, of what those jobs may be like," said Dan Saygers, a Rossford counselor.

According to manufacturers, these jobs are high-tech, clean and pay well. Officials say students should not limit themselves to only a traditional education.

"If you're a mom and dad out there, and your kids are middle school or younger, just be open-minded," said Kuhlman.

Be open-minded to pursuing jobs that desperately need to be filled.
