LUCAS COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A federal grant is funding a program to give Lucas County inmates a second chance after their time behind bars.

The Second Chance Grant is bringing $400,000 to the Lucas County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council to help prevent offenders from going back behind bars. Lucas County is one of only 15 in the country to receive the grant.

The program will give high-risk offenders help with case management, mental health services, education, legal services and housing assistance.

"If we don't have a plan to be able to fix portions of that process, where it can get back in the system and be able to get back in their neighborhoods, and be able to find a job, then all we're going to do is have people going back in the system," said Toledo Mayor Mike Bell.

The funds will help 100 inmates returning to Lucas County. The grant is expected to save the county upward of a million dollars if those participants break the cycle of incarceration for just one year.

Nicole Collier will have the full story at 6 p.m. on WTOL 11.
