TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The fight against blight continues in north Toledo as demolition of a major eyesore started Monday.

The Lucas County Land Bank, along with the city, Mercy Health Partners Legacy Project and the Bronson Place association have been working for this day to happen. Finally on Monday morning, crews began tearing down the former Arbors of Toledo nursing home on Cherry Street.

"I feel exhilarated. I'm extremely happy to see this coming down. It's been an eyesore," said Rita Piekutowski with the Bronson Place Association. "I think the whole neighborhood is going to appreciate having this building down and having more green space here."

The land bank acquired the property after its owner fell behind on property tax payments totaling more than $100,000. The former nursing home's owner paid $50,000 for the demolition.

"We always say, there's opportunity for green space and park land and urban gardening - things of that nature. This fits right into that wheelhouse," said Lucas County Treasurer Wade Kapszukiewicz.

Once the property is cleared and backfilled, it will be gifted to the Bronson Place Association for neighborhood reuse as a community garden contributing to neighborhood beautification.
