Springfield asking voters to approve new levy

HOLLAND, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Springfield Local Schools is asking voters to approve a new levy for operating expenses on November 5.

Citizens for Springfield Schools will host a kickoff event for the levy campaign Friday evening, where community members will have a chance to vote on the best pizza in the area.

If approved by voters, the 2.9 mill levy would cost the owner of a $100,000 home $101 a year. This is the first time the district has asked voters to approve a levy in two years.

District leaders say the money will be used to offset cuts in state and federal funding, and a recent drop in property values.

"We have waited as long as we possibly can in order to not get into deficit spending, which by law we are not allowed to do. So we waited as long as we possibly could and cut many, many places. We are very optimistic this will pass because our voters have been very supportive," said Superintendent Kathryn Hott.
