TPD could add more body cameras for officers

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Some Toledo police officers could be seen sporting their new camera glasses while on duty recently. Now the department is weighing a new option to expand the vision of officers.

A few months ago, the Toledo Police Department added cameras that mount to the side of glasses or helmets for the motorcycle unit. Officers say they were so helpful, they wanted to try something else. So they spent the last 30 days testing a new model that will mount to the officers' bodies.

"The chief is very committed to technology. That's evidenced by our sky cop program, our real-time crime center. This is just another tool that we want to use to help public service. It's as simple as that," said Lt. Mark King.

The motorcycle unit made history for the department, with cameras that helped track everything from their point of view. For one month, two officers working the night shift took the new body cameras out for a test run.

"The officers tried a variety of different mounting options: on their belt, their shirts, and things like that. So, we'll review a lot of the videos and see how the quality is, and what the officers are comfortable with, since they will be the ones wearing it," explained King.

These new cameras rolled on every call to which the two officers responded.

"As a matter of fact, I know of at least one case where we used it as evidence in a domestic violence case, where I was able to go right onto evidence.com site, download it, and burn it to a DVD and give it to the prosecutor's office," said King.

Now that the trial run is complete, King will sit down with the officers and the chief to hash out what worked and what didn't, to decide if the department should keep them. According to King, this model would be more cost-effective than the versions already in use.
