SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Sylvania Police Department has performed more ALICE trainings this year than ever, and they're gaining respect in not only their community, but surrounding areas, as well.

The ALICE program is being taught in schools across the country as a way to respond to an active shooter in a school. In Sylvania, the police department has gained a reputation for the way they present their program.

Sgt. Justin Music says ALICE can seem strong in nature, and aggressive, but the department uses a delicate manner to train.

"We had to cautiously walk down that path," Music said. "In doing so, we found a way to handle it with delicacy, and certainly handle it in a way we could remain professional, appropriate, and by doing so, what it did was it gained respect throughout our community."

Sgt. Music says the response has been so big, surrounding areas have reached out for their training program, including the Perrysburg and Ottawa Hills school districts.

"Everything we do, we try to do the best we can," he said. "When you're respected in your own community, it's one thing, but then when other communities reach out and certainly respect and give you some significant response to what you're doing, it's certainly a great feeling."

The Sylvania Police Department hasn't just gained respect locally, but also regionally and nationally. Their program was presented in North Carolina as best practices related to school safety.
