New committee focuses on local school funding

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Staff members in the Sylvania school district launched a new committee to educate the public about school funding. Their first meeting was Wednesday night.

Northwest Ohio Friends of Public Education (NOFPE) kicked off their effort at Sylvania Southview, where three other districts will be represented.

Dan Greenberg is a teacher at Southview, and founded NOFPE with other teachers, parents and community members.

The meeting Wednesday featured treasurers from Sylvania, Perrysburg, Springfield and Washington Local Schools. They discussed how education funding works, including vouchers, levies, and state funding.

When it comes to school levies, Greenberg says a lot of people who vote against them believe districts aren't spending their funds correctly, which isn't the case.

"It's the needs. It's the declining money from the state. It's the state shifting money to other charter schools and voucher programs and things like that," he said. "It makes it more difficult and puts more burden on local communities."

Greenberg says this grassroots effort is a statewide movement, and five different groups across Ohio will be formed with the same mission and goals.

"It's a non-partisan group. There are people from all sides of the political spectrum that are involved," Greenberg said of the committee. "It doesn't matter what your political party is. People have invested interest and care about public education."
