Maumee citizens’ academy learns self-defense

MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

This year's Maumee Citizens' Police Academy class is the biggest yet, out of 15 years of classes.

The academy gives students an inside look at the police department. This week's class was all about the special response unit and personal defense.

The entire special response team is equipped with various guns, flash bangs, entry tools, and the training to handle high-risk warrants and hostage situations quickly and with minimal force.

"Once they've gone through this, and they may not know much about a special response team, they may not even know that we have one here at the Maumee Police Division, but I think after they sit through this and can see exactly what those officers' abilities are, they're going to be very proud of the community," said Sgt. TJ Stratton.

Like the Special Response Unit, self-defense is a worst-case scenario precaution, but knowledge of both can make a difference.

The second part of Tuesday's class discussed and exercised that ability. Police self-defense and close-quarter combat tactics were taught. To Instructor Stratton, a class like this can provide that inside look and much more.

"I think they're going to get a little more hands-on to what officers are trained, and how well, and maybe how they could use that in a situation they may get into," he said.

Next week, the class will learn about traffic stops and OVI enforcement.
