Fort Benning prepares for potential government shutdown

FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -

If Congress does not approve a funding extension granting continuing resolution authority before midnight, the federal government will shut down effective Oct. 1 and many of Fort Benning's civilian employees will face a temporary furlough.

Regardless of a shutdown, all military and civilian personnel should report to work Oct 1.  At that time, they will receive guidance from their supervisors based on the current situation and available information.

In the event of a furlough, all essential services – law enforcement, medical and dental facilities, schools, childcare facilities and emergency services – will continue.

Fort Benning schools will remain open.  The Post Exchange, convenience stores and most morale, welfare and recreation services will remain open to serve our Soldiers, their Families and Civilian employees.

The commissary will remain open a full business day Oct. 1, even in the event of a shutdown, to reduce the amount of perishables on hand before beginning a systematic closure process to account for unsold products and secure facilities.

This temporary furlough may affect a number of services on post.  The Fort Benning website will be updated with official information regularly and as soon as it is available.  Our goal is to provide our Soldiers, civilians and their Families with accurate information until the current situation is resolved.

Fort Benning will remain open.  Our mission is to prepare Soldiers and leaders in support of our nation's defense and we will continue to do so through this time of uncertainty.

The Fort Benning command team is committed to taking care of our Soldiers, Families and civilians.  Programs and services on post, such as Army Emergency Relief and Army Community Service, stand ready to provide assistance when and where it is needed.

Fort Benning remains hopeful that a government shutdown will be averted. We know this is a time of uncertainty and ask for your patience and understanding.

Facebook posts from more than a year ago caused controversy at a west Toledo business Tuesday night. One month out of the year is certainly not enough to observe safer driving habits. This is something we should always keep in mind. The good news is, there are ways in which our changing culture is evolving to deal with technology and how it can both hel...
