TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Toledo man accused of hitting two women with his car, killing one and seriously injuring the other, has been found guilty.

Michael Yates has been found guilty of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault, after driving off Miami Street onto the sidewalk in July 2012. Yates fatally struck Stefanie Arnold, 27, of Painesville, OH, and critically injured Chelsea Skoch, 23, of Madison, OH.

An emotional Yates shook his head as Judge Myron Duhart read the verdict. Yates was found to be driving on a suspended license, plus under the influence of prescription pills, when the accident happened.

Marissa Von Gunten, said her sister, Stefanie, was a criminal justice major, and the type of person who would give anything to help those in need. She says the verdict is exactly what her family wanted to hear, and hopes this prevents another tragedy.

"There were a lot of tears when he said, 'guilty,' but it's because we were pleased that he's going to be held accountable for this, and not only this, but he's hopefully not going to be able to do it again. Hopefully he'll get the max sentence," said Von Gunten.

Yates argued that he fell asleep behind the wheel, but the judge said the investigation showed constant throttle on his car's accelerator seconds before the crash.

In the meantime, Arnold's family is setting up a 5K fundraiser in her honor Oct. 5.
