School teacher battles rare brain cancer

(WMC-TV) - Many people say Bolton High School teacher Dianne Young is a walking miracle. She started with four tumors in her brain, and is now down to three because of chemo and radiation -- and she is still working.

Students at Bolton High School say they absolutely love having her in class. But now, as the beloved teacher continues to fight for her students' education, she is also fighting the battle of her life.

"I have been diagnosed with Glioblastoma, which is a rare form of brain cancer. Its not cancer that travels to the brain, it forms in the brain," she said.

Young teaches senior English and is also Bolton High's yearbook sponsor.

For her, being in the classroom takes her mind away from a life threatening form of cancer.

"The prognosis is very grim. It doesn't even have a stage the prognosis is so grim," she explained.

Young was diagnosed on April 1. She was given three months to live.

Now, almost six months after diagnosis, she is still teaching while going through chemo treatments once a month.

"I'm entirely reliant on the doctors and God, prayers, lots and lots of prayers," said Young.

Young says it is hard to believe that just one year ago, she was the picture of health.

Now, she says she feels good but gets tired very easily.

To her students and colleagues, she's an inspiration who's determined not to give up.

"I enjoy life too much, enjoy working, my family, too much about everything to give up," says Young.
