Toledo water treatment plant needs another $1 million

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The City of Toledo needs to spend another $1 million on chemicals to treat algae-produced toxins in the lake water being drawn into the Collins Park water treatment facility.

"The water being produced and sent out to our customers is still top-notch, first rate and meets all the requirements. It's still excellent water," said Dave Leffler, Toledo DPU plant operations commissioner.

Leffler says it's a delicate balancing act to neutralize the toxins and make sure the drinking water is safe.

"The lab is constantly testing for the right amount of chemicals to take out the odors and the toxin," he said.

Councilman Mike Craig says the water plant staff deserves credit for keeping the water tasting and smelling the same.

"They're dealing with some adverse circumstances the best they can," Craig said. "As far as I've been able to tell, they've done an excellent job."

Besides the expense for additional bulk chemicals, council will also consider a request for $100,000 to acquire more property on Collins Park Avenue to make room for a new electrical sub-station for the water plant, as well as a $100,000 measure for security upgrades.
