Covington homeless shelter looking for new site

COVINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Northern Kentucky's only homeless shelter is launching a $1.5 million capital campaign to pay for a new location and other expenses.

Kenton County sold the Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky's current building to Gateway Community and Technical College as part of the college's urban campus expansion in Covington.

Shelter board president John Carey told The Kentucky Enquirer (http://bit.ly/1b7p54q ) that shelter officials are working with local officials to find a new home.

The capital campaign is trying to raise $1 million to acquire a facility, renovate it and secure a long-term lease. Carey says the remainder includes $200,000 for staff and $300,000 for an endowment.

The shelter, which housed 439 people last year, has operated in the 5,000-square-foot building since 2008, leasing it from the county for $1 per year.
