OSHP enforcement blitz reducing accidents on Turnpike

MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Construction is underway on the Ohio Turnpike through Maumee, and Ohio State Highway Patrol is making an extra effort to keep those workers safe.

The Swanton OSHP post is beefing up patrols on the Turnpike as a way to keep drivers and construction workers safe. The enforcement blitz has lasted through the month of September, from milepost 58 to milepost 65.

According to OSHP, the construction area has seen an increased number of crashes in recent months. Officials say during June and July, 26 percent of all crashes investigated on the first 80 miles of the Turnpike occurred in the construction zone.

Troopers are focusing on speeding and aggressive driving violations in an effort to combat the problem.

"People traveling through the area - use caution, keep a safe traveling distance, and watch the speed and workers," Lt. Vern Fisher warned drivers.

Lt. Fisher says since the start of the blitz, there have been no injury crashes in that area. He says the blitz ends at the end of September, but they will continue to patrol the area.
