Vail Meadows thanks community for help after fire

OREGON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Back in March, the Vail Meadows Equestrian Center took a loss like no other.

10 of their therapeutic horses, along with several other animals, were killed in an overnight barn fire.

6 months later things are getting back to normal.

On Saturday, the Center held an open house to thank their supporters.

Vail Meadow officials say this was done as a way of thanking the community for their unending support and dedication after the fire.

"The program is up and running well," said Boarding Director, Earnie Dickens."Things are as normal as possible."

He credits the community for the Center's recovery.

"The thing about this place is we couldn't run it at all if it wasn't for our volunteers. From the old ones down to the young ones," said Mr. Dickens.

That's why the Center held a free open house to show their appreciation on Saturday.

Dickens says, since the tragic fire, some valuable donations have come in.

"All of the horses we have, have been donated. A lot of people will have a horse that they can no longer take care of and ask us if we can use it," said Mr. Dickens.

Because of this the program now has 8 new therapeutic horses.

They're currently looking to add a couple more to replace the 10 that were lost.

"We're finally getting back on our feet. We have all these horses and it's making the clients real happy and helping out the community," said volunteer Jessica Rawlings.

Even though things are getting back to normal the thoughts of that tragic morning still linger.

"You play back every scenario in your head and I have no answers I wish I knew and I had a magic button that I could go back in history and fix it but it's too late for that," said Mr. Dickens.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but Dickens says they're taking steps to prevent it from happening again.

As for the old barn, they don't plan to rebuild it, but to expand on the existing one.

BYLINE: Victoria Idoni EAST TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - This is an all too familiar scene on the roads: people getting distracted behind the wheel. April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. One month out of the year is certainly not enough to observe safer driving habits. This is something we should always keep in mind. The good news is, there are ways in which our changing culture is evolving to deal with technology and how it can both hel...
