TPD promotes 5 officers to Sergeant

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

It was a day of pride on Friday for 5 of Toledo's finest, as they went from officers to sergeants in a promotion ceremony.

The Toledo Police Department says they have between 20 and 30 officers retire each year.

That turnover has recently left them with five Sergeant positions to fill.

Friday, after a lot of studying, hard work and qualifying, five new leaders stepped up to take on that job.

"I actually knew very young. I know a lot of people say that, but I really did. My dad's the chief prosecutor for the city of Toledo, so I always followed him in court cases, and the law. I always looked up to policemen," said new Sergeant Tonya Toska.

It was a proud moment, and a confident step for these men and woman, as they took an oath of leadership.

"We're going to be having over 600 officers here shortly on our police department, it's very important that we have proper supervision and guidance for all the patrol officers that are out there, and that's what the sergeants are going to be doing," said Sgt. Joe Heffernan.

It was a ceremony steeped in tradition, and sealed with love, as the people closest to these Sergeants pinned their new badges over their hearts.

And practice made for a picture perfect start to the rest of these new sergeants' lives.
