Construction underway for Boy Scout center at Camp Miakonda

Fundraising for the construction of a new leadership center at Camp Miakonda has been ongoing for four years, but construction started eight months ago.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Fundraising for the construction of a new leadership center at Camp Miakonda has been ongoing for four years, but construction started eight months ago.

When construction is finished around the beginning of November, the Jadel Leadership Center will house the Boy Scouts of America's Erie Shores Council executive members, a number of meeting rooms that will be open to the public, a scout shop, and many more amenities.

"All of our volunteers are really excited about new opportunities," said Ed Caldwell, scout executive and CEO. "The training center and the capabilities of that training center are just serving the community. That's what we're all about."

Once the building is complete, the council could still be fundraising the final $90,000 needed for the project. The $2.9 million has been in the works for four years and countless donors have made the center a reality, but in the months following its completion, the rest of the money still needs to be raised.

The new center is already creating excitement. The current offices for the council are deep in Camp Miakonda, in rental cabins.

"For us, it's more to be able to put a stake in the ground and have a permanent home," Caldwell said. "It's a wonderful feeling. We're really looking forward to it."
