TPS pushing to pass renewal levy

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Public Schools is spearheading a major effort to get voters on board with saving the schools.

District administrators are gearing up for a campaign to renew a levy in November. Interim Superintendent Dr. Romules Durant says the secret weapon will be the community.

The levy is not a new tax, it's a renewal of a 6.5 mill levy for another five years. It would generate $13 million for the district. Durant says he hopes that a community-driven approach will help secure the vote.

Durant says when he accepted the position of interim superintendent, he signed on top help carry out the vision for better schools for the community.

"They've put their desires into me, from all walks, from the business community, the faith-based community, the families in that area, and I want to give every bit of me back to this community," he said. "Many people think that I'm stretching myself too thin, but the reality is that I live this work."

The levy will be Issue 24 on the November ballot.
