United North creating new community in north Toledo

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

United North has been working to revitalize homes in north Toledo, trying to bring new homeowners into the area by building and rehabbing homes.

"I feel accomplished," said Terry Glazer of United North. "I feel like I'm going to be able to leave my daughter something, and I feel like I did something that's worth sharing."

Terry Glazer of United North says home ownership is the foundation to a lot of things.

"People plant roots when they become homeowners, and then they are committed to the neighborhood, they get involved, it increases property values, so it's very important. Probably one of the best things in life when you can own your own home," said Glazer.

Today was a celebration of the roots that have been planted here for Tamara Hicks and her family.  At the end of July, she became the owner of this rehabbed home in the heart of one village.

"There were definitely times where I felt like I wasn't capable of doing it, but every time that I felt that way, God reassured me that I was," said Hicks.

With help from the city of Toledo's neighborhood stabilization program, and the one village financial opportunity center, Tamara's dreams became a reality.

"They help people with credit repair, resume writing, budgeting, getting themselves to that spot where they can get credit approval," said Shaulonda Jones of United North

Now that Tamara has the approval and keys, she can focus on the legacy she wants to leave behind for her daughter.

"I did everything for her, and nothing is too big for her. Everything that she puts her mind to, she can do."
