(Toledo News Now) -

A national initiative to get people to stop texting while driving has hit northwest Ohio.

The ‘It Can Wait' campaign aims to raise awareness. Statistics show that there are more than 100,000 accidents a year due to texting while driving.

A representative from AT&T stopped by the Toledo Red Cross recently to talk to volunteers about the national campaign that begins Thursday, and how they are trying to get people to go online and pledge to never text and drive.

Director of External Affairs Dennis Hellmann shared a 10-minute video with the volunteers, which featured testimonials from those affected by texting and driving. He also talked about a cell phone app that senses when the car is moving and notifies those texting you that you are driving, and will get back to them at a more convenient time.

"We're encouraging people – don't respond to text messages, use the drive mode app, turn the phone off, put the phone in your purse or put it in the back seat of the car, put it in your trunk," Hellmann said. "But…don't text and drive."

Visit the AT&T website here to take the pledge.
