Liberty Center students raise suicide awareness

LIBERTY CENTER, OH (Toledo News Now) -

School leaders across northwest Ohio are talking to students about suicide. It's a topic being brought up both in the classroom and outside of school.

Dozens of students at Liberty Center High School are working to raise awareness on the subject. Posters line the hallways, and informational bags with ribbons and suicide hotline numbers are being handed out.

"It's good to see that there are students, and not just adults, who are here for everyone who are feeling depressed," said Gaby Hawkins, a student at Liberty Center.

More than 50 students have joined the Liberty Center Suicide Awareness and Prevention Group, led by counselor Shelley Ahleman.

"We've been working on getting out the message that depression is treatable and suicide is preventable," Ahleman explained.

She says it's important the students know what to do and where to turn if they know someone struggling with depression.

"Often times, kids will begin that conversation with a friend, and we want all of the kids to know what the resources are if a friend shares that information with them," she said.

The group is also working to raise money for a teen suicide prevention hotline, and several high schools in the area plan to put stickers on football helmets at the game this Friday.

"Every student in our building is precious, and we don't' want to lose a single one of them," Ahleman said.
