Cincinnati's new police chief looks forward to job

CINCINNATI (AP) - Cincinnati's new police chief says he is looking forward to assuming the job this month and is committed to maintaining enough staff to keep officers and the public safe.

Jeffrey Blackwell also told reporters at a news conference Tuesday that the 53% increase in Cincinnati homicides so far this year compared with last year will be a major focus for his new administration.

Blackwell plans to meet with police and civic leaders before starting his job Sept. 30. The deputy police chief in Columbus says he doesn't currently see any need for widespread changes in the Cincinnati department of about 1,300.

Cincinnati officials say Blackwell has been commended in Columbus for outreach to young people and immigrant populations and for his efforts to reduce crime and cut operating costs.
