BBB Alert: Robocall scam shut down by FTC

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Federal Trade Commission has shut down a robocalling scam that has affected many in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.

The scammers offered lower credit card interest rates, sometimes as low as 3 percent. In reality, they took up to $1,600 in up front, illegal fees. Customers never saw lower interest rates.

The calls often came from "Rachel" or "Jennifer," and sometimes claimed to be from the government or offering a government-insured plan.

As a part of the shutdown, the FTC has banned Treasure Your Success and Ambrosia Web Design from making robocalls or telemarketing.

Although this scam has been shut down, there are likely similar scams still out there.  Dick Eppstein of the Better Business Bureau says robocalls to your cell phone are illegal, and almost always a scam. Even if you are on the national Do Not Call List, scammers may still call you. Be extremely cautious when receiving offers from calls to your cell phone.
