Police auction raises $137K for TPD, city

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The City of Toledo's general fund grew significantly over the weekend, thanks to a police auction that cleared the impound lot of nearly 100 vehicles.

Nearly 300 bidders participated in the auction Saturday. Police say the 96 vehicles sold were either abandoned, or forfeitures used in the commission of crimes.

"Those assets that they have accumulated through their criminal enterprise actually get used and turned against them and other people that are harming the community," said Sgt. Joe Heffernan.

The auction raised more than $137,000. Of that, $26,000 will go back to the department to help them fight future crime; the rest goes to the city's general fund.

The $26,000 for the department goes into the law enforcement trust, toward the purchase of new equipment, the cost of narcotics investigations, and other police operations.
