(Toledo News Now) - It should have been the night of Chris Green's life. It was the Division II state title game and Green's play on the field helped propel Central Catholic to a championship.
"You don't know how many times you're going to be in a state title game," Green said. "I took a little time to myself [afterwards]. I started crying a little bit about the whole situation."
But the night was bittersweet for Green. The person he loved the most wasn't able to see his crowning achievement.
"It was probably at the beginning of my sophomore year," he explained. "My mom was going through a situation and she was incarcerated for identity theft."
Some scouts say Green's the second best linebacker in the class of 2015. On the field, he had it all.
But with his mom in jail, Green was in danger of having nothing - not even a real place to call home.
"There was a point where I didn't know where I was going to go. The first person I told was my fifth-grade counselor."
Green talked to the right person. His old counselor talked to family members and soon her brother Jeff and his family volunteered to take Green in.
Ginger Duhaime said the decision was a no-brainier.
"We talked about it and we decided it would be a great fit," she said.
And so a 230-pound teenager was moving in with the Duhaimes and their 10-year-old son Caleb. It's been almost a year, and now everyone feels as if he's a full-time member of the family.
"He brings a whole different energy into the house," Ginger explained. "It's really great."
Green agrees.
"I look at Ginger like a mom, Jeff like a dad, and Caleb like a brother," he said.
