"Million Mile Run" raises money for cancer research

MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Dozens of people in Northwest Ohio hit the track on Saturday to raise money for childhood cancer research.

It was all part of a nationwide effort called "The Million Mile Run."

Groups across the country are getting together and are trying to collectively walk or run a million miles and raise $10 million for childhood cancer research in the process.

Saturday's event took place at Maumee High school.

Groups from the elementary, middle and high schools all participated.

The goal, locally, was to collectively walk 100 miles at the event and raise $800.

"If there's something I can do for childhood cancer research, especially, I mean its so under funded by the government that I think its really great to give back to it, especially with the research and raising money for it as well," said Ashlee Balcerzak, president of the Interact volunteer group.

The group says childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease for children under the age of 15.
