Toledo Police: 18 easy car thefts in last two weeks

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Police say 18 cars have been stolen across the city in the last two weeks, but police say they could have been prevented.

Police say the drivers are making it easy for car thieves by leaving their keys in the ignition.

"It just takes a second for them to jump in that car and go," said TPD Sgt. Joe Heffernan.

Heffernan says the thefts are mainly occurring at carry-outs and convenience stores, where people are making a quick trip in and out. But by leaving their keys in the ignition, their car running, makes it an easy crime of opportunity.

There is some good news, though.

"We recover these cars fairly quickly and usually a few blocks away," Heffernan said. "But again, it's a 100 percent preventable crime. Just take that extra minute to take your keys out of the car."

Heffernan says car theft rates seem to be higher than normal lately, and wants drivers to follow two simple rules: Keep your keys with you, and take your valuables and possessions of the car. He says this is especially important during winter months, when motorists warm up their cars in the driveway, and during the holiday shopping season.
