Settlement reached in the Chardon Healing Fund lawsuit

Chardon, OH Chardon, OH
CHARDON, OH (WOIO) -

Attorneys for United Way of Greater Cleveland, United Way Services of Geauga County and plaintiffs Todd McKenney, et al. announced Friday they have reached a settlement in the Chardon Healing Fund lawsuit.

In May, the three families whose sons were killed in the 2012 Chardon High School shooting filed a court action asking the Geauga County Probate Court to determine the extent of their rights as beneficiaries of the Fund.

The settlement provides for some additional payment to each of the families to be made by the Fund.

All parties agreed the settlement provides a satisfactory resolution of the dispute and avoids the trauma further litigation would cause to the victims' families, the survivors and the Chardon community.

As part of the settlement, all parties agree to keep the specific details of the settlement private and will not further comment on the litigation.

The settlement addresses the needs of the deceased victims' families. The balance of the fund will be used to address ongoing physical and emotional needs of others in the Chardon community impacted by the shooting.

All of the parties acknowledge the hard work and dedication provided by the Chardon Healing Fund volunteer board.

The Chardon Healing Fund was established within days of the February 27, 2012 shooting at Chardon High School, which resulted in the death of three students and left three others injured.

The Chardon Healing Fund was established with the dual purpose to address the immediate needs of the families directly affected by the event and the ongoing emotional and physical needs of the students and staff of Chardon Local Schools, as well as the greater community.

United Way Services of Geauga County administered the Fund without compensation so all donations could be used for its intended purpose.

An 11-member, all-volunteer board representing  all segments of the Chardon Community-business leaders, civic and public officials, the religious community and the school district-was formed to make decisions regarding distribution of contributions to the Chardon Healing Fund.
