Community learning centers opening in three TPS elementaries

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Three more Toledo schools are receiving grant money to help students.

The Ohio Department of Education awarded the 21st Century Learning Grant to TPS, allowing after-school programs at Jones, Everette and Riverside elementary schools.

They're called 21st Century Community Learning Centers. The centers will provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children, specifically, students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools. They will help students meet state and local standards in core academic subjects.

"We find research that after the hours of 4-7 is when you find students get themselves in trouble," said Superintendent Romules Durant. "What we're doing is provided curricular activity where students can engage in academic enrichment, nutrition, and physical activity."

Three Toledo schools are already part of the program, assisting 150 students. The three new centers will help 75 students.

Charmen Burton has been attending the center at Spring Elementary School.

"I used to talk a lot," Burton said. "I used to get in trouble, but now with the program, it's helped me progress from that."

The centers are a partnership between TPS and the YMCA/JCC of Greater Toledo. The results have been impressive.

"It shows that those that are in academic enrichment programs for 30 days or more, they will retain their materials for things learned," said Sarah Otis, with the YMCA/JCC.
