Maumee Police offer citizens’ academy

MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

For $35, Maumee residents can attend an 8-week course that gives them a hands-on look at what the Maumee Police experience on a daily basis.

Their citizens' police academy starts next week. Everything from gun training to special response team drills will be covered, and there will be presentations from judges and the county coroner.

The class starts Tuesday, Sept. 17 and runs every Tuesday from 6-10 p.m. until Nov. 5.

The Maumee Police Department only holds the citizens' academy every 2-3 years when there is a need. There are already about 40 people registered for this year's class.

Sgt. TJ Stratton says the program has been a huge success, and it's a good way for the public to learn about the police, and vice versa.

"I think that most people don't know a lot about the police," he said. "They see a shiny car and they see a uniform, maybe they've been pulled over for a traffic infraction some time, but they don't really know what we're all about. This gives them that inside as to what we do and how we do it, and it puts us on a much more even playing field."

To sign up for the academy, call Sgt. Stratton at 419-897-7017.

This year's Race for the Cure in Findlay is taking place right in the middle of a September heat wave. Temperatures at race time will be in the 70s. By midday expect temperatures in the mid-to-upper 80s under bright sunshine. This would be a hot and oppressive day right in the middle of summer, let alone in late September.  Be sure to prepare for the conditions by drinking plenty of fluids and considering wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
