Springfield Schools get security, communication upgrade

Teachers in the Springfield school district now have phones in every classroom in an effort to keep students safe.

SPRINGFIELD, OH (Toledo News Now) - Teachers in the Springfield school district now have phones in every classroom in an effort to keep students safe.

In the event of an emergency, the phones can be used for communication across the building.

Superintendent Kathryn Hott says there are two positives to the new phone system: Safety and parent/staff communication.

"If there ever was an issue or an emergency, it's a quick way to communicate," Hott said. "It's a great enhancement of communication between home and school, parent to teacher."

Hott says the phones are part of a comprehensive security program in all schools.

"It's been such a positive thing for us because we were able to do it saving money from our old system," she said.

In March, staff participated in active shooter training. The district is currently in the process of conducting individual building surveys. Hott says they'll be able to see if there are any areas in the need of more training.
