Thisyear's Toledo Fire Academy recruits marked Sept. 11 by remembering the 343 firefighterswho lost their lives.

The51 recruits were up before the sun to salute the flag at half-staff. They thenparticipated in a unique challenge: They climbed up and down a tower 110 times, the same amount as the New York firefighters did 12 years ago.

"Givethem a little taste of what that must have been like years ago as thosefirefighters ascended those stairs, trying to affect the rescue and fight thatfire," said Toledo Fire Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld.

Therecruits were silent for most of the activity. As the temperature in thestairwell rose and sweat drenched their shirts, the recruits didn't give up.They asked to carry heavy equipment.

Thewhole time, they were also listening to the actual dispatch of Brooklynfirefighters as they went into the flames 12 years ago.

"Wewant our recruits to hear that," said Hertzfeld. "Actually, we want all of usto hear that. We want to hear those voices and remember the service anddedication that those firefighters put forth that day.
