Unanswered questions in death of Elaina Steinfurth

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

As the community continues to mourn the death of east Toledo toddler Elaina Steinfurth, there are still many unanswered questions.

Just 24 hours after police confirmed DNA results from the remains found in a box last week belong to baby Elaina, Steven King requested a continuance of the trial that was scheduled to start Monday. He asked for a new pretrial, which will happen Thursday morning. There are no new charges against King at this time.

The Lucas County Prosecutor's Office along with the Coroner's Office is expecting to have more information within the next few days about the cause of death. The autopsy is not complete because the coroner only had bones to work with.

Once the cause of death is determined, police will be able to build a strong case against the responsible party.

For Elaina's family, the cause of death is another necessary piece of the puzzle that will be hard for them to hear.

"We can't be prepared for, you know, what they tell us," said Richard Schiewe, Elaina's grandfather. "We know it's Elaina. We just want it so we can put her to rest and be done with it. Then we'll go on with the justice."
