Online petition fighting for Fostoria firefighter jobs

FOSTORIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The firefighters in Fostoria could soon be out of work, but the chief says he's taking a proactive approach to protect his division.

Eight firefighter positions are on the chopping block due to a shortage in funding – that's about 40 percent of the staff.

The department has created an online petition, asking the community to show support for their heroes.

Fire Chief Keith Loreno says when it comes to fire departments, people often don't realize how important it is to be fully staffed until it's too late.

"If your garbage isn't picked up on Monday, everybody knows within a week that there's a problem in the community," Loreno said. "The problem with the fire department is, if you don't really stay on top of it and people don't see that we've had reduced services, they don't know there's an issue until there's actually an emergency. Of course, that's really a bad time to find out."

The petition will be sent to FEMA next Thursday, with the hope of getting a $1.2 million grant to hold onto all eight positions for the next two years.
