TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - The polls open at 6:30 Tuesday morning. The primary election will determine which two candidates for Toledo mayor will continue to the November election.

On Monday, Mayor Mike Bell spoke at the dedication of the new Brady Engineering Innovation Center at the University of Toledo. Bell said he has turned the city around.

"My message is out there. I've been doing this for about four years," Bell said. "People know who I am. I'm just trying to fix things. We have a city now that has a balanced budget. We're moving in the right direction."

Current Lucas County Auditor Anita Lopez wrapped up her campaigning Monday afternoon, but her staff continued to make calls.

"People know Anita," said Lopez Campaign Manager Bill Benner. "She's got a track record of proven leadership in the auditor's office and the recorder's office, and they know her. She's in touch with the people."

City Councilman Mike Collins waved to drivers in front of the Northwest Police Station on Sylvania Avenue. He is promising to re-open the station within his first 100 days in office.

"This is a pivotal point in the history of the City of Toledo," Collins said. "We make a mistake at this point and we may be irreversibly or incurably going down a really bad path."

Councilman Joe McNamara spent his last hours going door-to-door in west Toledo. He says the city needs change at the top.

"I think the best way to win an election is to talk to voters and find out what they're concerned about," he said. "I'm having some great conversations about my plan to increase jobs, to fight crime, and to strengthen neighborhoods."

The top two candidates in Tuesday's primary will face off in the general election Nov. 5.
