SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The expansion at Sylvania Area Family Services began in 2007. Now, thanks to the help of volunteers, the finishing touches are underway.

Renovations took longer than expected after several obstacles, including the downturn in the economy. Those at Sylvania Area Family Services say if it weren't for the help of volunteers, the 5,500-square-foot expansion wouldn't have happened.

"None of it would have happened at all if the local unions hadn't, you know, stepped up to the plate," said Erin Curley, construction manager and volunteer. "I think, as Toledo, we need to be extremely proud of our local unions for what they've done here."

The new addition includes meeting rooms, a kitchenette, and will allow the agency's off-site programs the opportunity to return and operate under one roof.

All materials used were donated by local businesses, organizations and community members, and they were put in by volunteers – something the agency needs in order to function.

"We rely, as an agency, heavily on volunteers each and every day," said Executive Director Jason Robertson. "So this is just another example of how those volunteers, how the community has come out to embrace our agency and helped us help those that are in need in the community."

A few more minor details still need to be completed before the agency opens the new addition in about two weeks.
