Olander Park increasing security after summer vandalism

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

After several boats were vandalized this summer, Olander Park is increasing its security.

"It's terrible to have this vandalism because it hurts everybody," said Dan Smith.

Smith uses the bike path at Olander Park almost every day in the summer time. He says the recent vandalism and arson, has been disappointing.

Now, Olander Park officials say they are working on plans for additional security measures, including more surveillance cameras and police patrol at night.

In the past a private security firm out of Toledo performed the night security checks, but now the park is no longer using their services, saving $400 dollars a month.

Smith says he hopes the changes help, but regardless he says he's never not felt safe at Olander Park.

"This is a very safe park. I've never seen any trouble here," said Smith. "I've never felt in any way threatened. I assume that the vandalism is occurring at night when no body's here. I just hope they catch the vandals. But, I don't think that anybody should get the idea that this is not a safe place to come."

Olander Park's Interim Director Erika Buri says they've already increased security, but would not elaborate.
