TPS and YMCA/JCC team up for preschool, child care

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A long-standing partnership between Toledo Public Schools and the YMCA/JCC took a step forward. Deveaux Elementary opened its doors to preschool-aged children to give them a head start on their education.

"It's so exciting because this allows us to collaborate in an environment that's built for children, that's premier, and then it allows us to provide continuity of care and education," said Sarah Otis, with the YMCA and JCC.

The school already had the extra space, and the YMCA and JCC wanted to increase their presence in west Toledo.

The facility will be open from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. to provide before and after school care for students up to the age of 12, and preschool for children gearing up for Kindergarten.

"We use creative curriculum," Otis said. "We also use a web-based curriculum where it's very child-directed and the adults help the children learn where their interest is."

The district says research shows children who don't participate in preschool are two years behind in Kindergarten compared to children who do attend preschool. This program aims to level the playing field.

"We're also feeding the students here," said TPS Superintendent Romules Durant. "We're literally doing a comprehensive approach at the same time, being much more inclusive in our other agencies, from health and mental agencies, but make sure that students are getting served at the earlier age."
