Donations needed for Lenawee County's 'Shop with a Cop'

The Lenawee County Sheriff's Department is already gearing up for its annual Shop with a Cop program, and is hoping community support can help keep the program going for children in need.

LENAWEE COUNTY, MI (Toledo News Now) - Preparations are under way for an annual holiday event that helps Lenawee County kids in need.

The Lenawee County Sheriff's Department is already gearing up for its annual Shop with a Cop program, a holiday tradition where a member of the sheriff's department is paired with a local child in need. Together, the pair goes shopping for essentials, like new socks and winter accessories.

The department works with Walmart to fund the program, but officials say over the last few years, the store's funds have been dwindling. Since they want to keep the program running, they're asking for donations from the community.

"It's probably at least equally as beneficial to the officers as it is to the kids. When you give a kid a pair of socks and they're not even wearing socks under their boots," explained Lt. Jeff Ewald, "they're so thrilled to get that pair of socks, it brings tears to your eyes."

Just $100 is needed to provide a child with winter essentials, as well as a small gift given by Santa himself. This year, the sheriff's department hopes to raise about $4,000 to help 40 children.

Lenawee County Sheriff Jack Welsh said the program has been a success in the past, due to the public's generous donations.

Anyone interested in contributing to this worthy cause can drop off or send a donation to:
