Perrysburg approves final phase of sewer separation project

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Perrysburg City Council unanimously approved the final phase of a sewer separation project on Tuesday.

Phase three of the project will add capacity to the liquid side of the city's waste water treatment plant, and separate the storm water and sewer systems at the plant. That will allow the city to dump rain water into the Maumee River during heavy rain storms without dumping sewer water.

"[The goal is that] We keep sewage out of the river, and that sounds simple, but the fact is that most communities dump some sewage in the river. That's just the way it is. It could be this river, it could be in Tempe, Arizona. Everybody is dumping water somewhere," said Councilman Todd Grayson.

The measure passed by council on Tuesday allows the city to advertise bids for the project, and keeps the plan on schedule to receive a loan from the Environmental Protection Agency.

Work on the project is expected to begin in early 2014, and be finished within one year.
